About Banking in Latvia

The World Economic Forum, in its report - The Global Competitiveness Report 2010–2011, has ranked Latvia at # 127 with a score of 3.9 in terms of soundness of banks in the country.

The Association of Commercial Banks of Latvia (ACBL) is a public organisation, uniting on voluntary principle the banks registered in Latvia and branches of foreign banks founded on July 23, 1992. Its core purpose is to contribute to strengthening and development of the banking system of Latvia. The main tasks of the association are:

  • Coordination in solving common banking problems
  • Representation of collective bank interests at public and municipal institutions, as well as local and international organisations
  • Protection of rights and interests of members
  • Participation in improvement of bank legislation
  • Arranging training and improvement of professional skills of bank employees
  • Methodical, legal and consultative assistance to Association members
  • Organizing exchange of experience in bank operation matters

The fiscal year in the country begins on 1 January and ends on 31 December.
